I truly wish that I could sing this with confidence, that this was my experience as well as my intellectual assent. I am not saying that I doubt the veracity of John Newton's words. I simply mean that I wish I could make them more my words as well.
But, I am where I am. I am still a child of God, though a recalcitrant child. I am a seeker of God, but aren't we all at some level even though most people have no idea that they seek Him? I am a "hoper" in God, tenaciously pursuing Him though life and fear give me many reasons to abandon that pursuit. Yet to NOT pursue Him, that is the more terrifying prospect. For without Him, all that is left is this world, filled with crazy, fallible, corruptible, decaying human beings. None of them can, nor can any worldly experience, meet the deepest needs of my soul. So I continue the pilgrimage with my broken faith.

Cryptically speaking, that is.
It's not cryptic. We sang this hymn at my bible study last night and I was inspired by how meaningful the lyrics are. It is just a beautiful hymn, which is why it is played so much perhaps.
My favorite hymn though is "When I Survey."

It wasn't so cryptic until Annie commented the cryptic comment which made it cryptic retroactively. Thanks for decrypting it.
Ah yes, a wonderful hymn indeed. It has to be the most famous hymn ever.
I particularly like William Shatner's rendition of it.
